MATTHEW 9: 11
«Jesus heard it and said to them: Those who are good and healthy do not need a doctor, but the sick»
These words of Jesus have an impact on the life of all men, his purpose in coming to this earth was derived in what was his death on the cross. Christians from all over the world recall this event in what is called Holy Week.
When remembering the events that occurred in the last days of the life of the Lord Jesus since his entry into Jerusalem, the celebration of his last Passover with his disciples, his judgment, crucifixion; they are revived these days through theatrical performances, commemorative meetings, time of abstention from some enjoyments; all with the purpose of remembering what happened a long time ago. But what was Jesus really doing when he gave his life on a cross?
As the verse quoted in the beginning says, humanity required health to an illness; and we are not referring to a condition of the body, but to one of the soul. Everyone at birth brings that disease rooted in our hearts and is called sin. That same illness in our hearts, which makes us behave in a selfish way when we do not want to share a toy with another child, is what moves us in our adult life many times not to do the right thing.
To Jesus dying on the cross, in the first instance, teaches us the eternal love that the Father (our creator) has for humanity, giving in sacrifice to his own Son, and in turn Jesus reaffirming that love, by obeying and surrendering his own life in sacrifice of us.
Consequently, Jesus pays the price we had to pay for our life of sin. There is no other human being like Jesus who lived on this earth and from whom no sin was found. Jesus becomes that way in the perfect Lamb, necessary and required for us to be healed of that disease that we carry in us.
It is available to everyone who wants to take it, because it is true that Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is important, but more importantly, he did not remain in the tomb but was resurrected.
It’s like that right now you fall ill with cancer and just find the cure, would not you take the remedy if they offer it, at no cost? It would not be wise not to accept it.
That is what represents the death of Jesus on the cross and his Resurrection; the cure for our disease called sin. Are you willing to take it?
